SAUL BASS

Saul bass was truly one of the greatest ever film makers of all time but is most recognised for his opening title sequences which has been used in famous films such as west side story, psycho and alien. Saul bass started his career as a graphic designer but his designs were recognised by Otto Preminger after designing a movie poster for one of his films, Preminger instantly saw his talent and got him right on the case to design the title sequence for Carmen Jones.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM
The man with the golden arm is one of the more well known of his title sequences with the usage of his trademark design which is loads of different patterns of lines; the colours are bold with the white lines and the black background, strangely you would expect more gold to be used due to the film name however it links to the story line of which consists of a man who struggled with an heroin addiction but went clean when he was in prison, however after his sentence was finished he struggles to get back in to the normal routine in the new modern world. The music being played is a type of jazz and the animated lines bounce around with the beat, the tune is odd because it is quite a steady beat however the increasing speed of the beat increases the understanding in what to expect.

ALIEN
Alien is one of the more modern films soul bass worked on before he died , the intro wasn’t very long and stuck with a low detail setting of what seems to be an un recognisable planet which the camera is panning around. The main feature of the into is most probably the title alien slowly and cleverly spelt out on the top of the screen using bass’s signature bold and straight lines. The music is not really a song but more of a sound of a machine working in a factory.
